CATS ON TUESDAY

A GROUP OF CAT LOVERS WHO WRITE ABOUT THEIR CATS ONCE A WEEK ON TUESDAYS

Sooo, as Henry told you, I went to the v-e-t on Saturday morning. This lady v-e-t was nice and said I can get my allergy shots instead of the icky liquid medicine! She even thought it might help the arthritis in my hips. She put me on the floor, and asked me to walk. I obliged her with my sweet waddle, (which makes mommy worry.)
I am 10lbs, 2 ounces, my coat is luscious, though she did shave my bum and belly a bit. My ears were a bit dirty, but she did not clean them, thank goodness!
Mommy and Daddy are not too happy with me lately. Apparently, they don't like it when I pee or poop somewhere other than my litter box. They even told the vet, (I was so embarrassed!) She didn't seem concerned, though. She said I am old and sometimes can't be bothered to go to the box. Mommy is still concerned. She wants me to ask you all if this has ever happened to you. Any suggestions she would appreciate your wisdom.
Mommy here: She seems to like to pee on plastic bags or crinkly papers. She'll poop anywhere.

Mum wanted to say that her Dollycat who could be Rosie's twin by the way, used to do things like that as well. Dollycat was old too when she started doing it and would poo outside the box, Mumtried alsorts and sed to think it was because I had come along but now thinks it was just because she was getting old. Mum started spraying stuff that was meant to deter around the places she went and it seemed to help as Dollycat started using her tray again. Hope it gets sorted for you.. HUgs GJ xx

I agree with the vet... It is not uncommon. Before my time, HH had a little girl kitty and when she got to be about 17, she got confused about where to go. The thing is, they have little control as they age. She didn't piddle in the wrong place on purpose. It just happened. Wish I could offer some advice.... One thing... keep track of plastic bags and such. Hope you get some great advice from others.

How old is Rosie? This isn't uncommon in older cats. She is so beautiful!!!

Glad to hear your vet visit went well and that you're feeling good. We are going through the same dilemma right now, with Cricket. She's about a year old. Our dad is getting VERY fed up with her, but he knows he'll break Wren's heart if he gets rid of her. Mom is going to make a vet appt. for her and see if there's crystals involved or if it's behavioral. If so, mom will try another litterbox and see if that works. She seems to go on the computer room floor (the same room the box is in), mom and dad's bedroom floor in the corner, and the downstairs bathroom sink. It's just pee though. Good luck Rosie!

We're glad Rosie had a good vet visit. We don't about inappropriate peeing outside the box, though. Maybe puppy pads in the spots she does it? She probably can't help it...cats *can* get dementia as they age, so maybe she is forgetting where to go. Additional litter boxes? Good luck to you!

I don't have any elder advise, but I think that she just likes the feel of the plastic and does not like the feel and/or smell of the litter.

The best thing would be to increase the number of litter boxes. As we kitties get older sometimes we forget where the box is.
I'm glad she's doing well otherwise, pretty gal!

My 16-year-old Cinders has slowed down a lot and still doesn't mess up.
Perhaps Rosie found her toilet a bit far and had to go?

My vet said I should have as many cat boxes as I have cats. I also would be concerned that she might have something going on such as a bladder infection, crystals & etc. Especially if this happened all of a sudden.

By the way, no I don't have a tripod.

Can you try changing the litter to see if that's the problem.

Henry says that Rosie tells him (on the sly) that she's just trying to get me (her Dad) to change the litters more often.

None of us are elderly cats here, but according to my human, it does happen sometimes with cats who are up there in years. Just try not to leave plastic or crinkly sitting around - make all the areas other than her litter box unappealing for her. Meanwhile, make her litter box as clean and appealing as possible - no hood and a low entry way to make it easy for her to get in and out - and maybe get one or two extras and put them in different places so she doesn't have as far to go to find a place to go.

When Mouschi, our late cat got older she basically just got lazy.
She wasnt so bad in the summer as she would spend a lot of time in the garden - not sure if Rosie is a garden cat!
At night we tried to make sure the litter tray wasn't far away!
She did sometimes do the toilet in the bath.....!
We never did figure that one out.

I'm sure the vet is right, but did she get any bloodwork done? The reason I ask is that I thought of kidneys. A lot of times older kitties get kidney failure, which is an inability of the kidneys to concentrate urine. That means every time they pee, they pee out more water than in health. I am unfortunately well acquainted with CRF (chronic renal failure) but certainly not trying to needlessly worry you. Maybe another thought is for her to have her own litter box. Good luck! We're very jealous of Rosie's trim weight. Lucy is still trying to lose weight.
